In
the design of the course, which is due to the professional skill and
experience of the Arnold Palmer studio, there is a clear influence of
American golfing culture. First of all there is a great deal of water which
plays a strategic role, forcing golfers to be always aware of its
presence. Hills, hillocks and undulations are located all along the
holes and around the greens; this feature makes the course unique in its
kind in Italy, and certainly does not make life easy if your stroke is
not quite perfect. This is all enlivened by clumps of tall trees and
enormous bunkers, which require careful assessment before making every
stroke. At the start of each hole there are tees of various shapes and
sizes, varying in number from two to four; besides shifting the axis of
play, this feature also makes the game more enjoyable. The foundation of
the fairways , the mechanical structure of which has been modified by
spreading tons of organic substance and by optimizing maintenance work,
completes the picture of a course that represents an important
innovation in Italian golf.

This
course is located in the Venetian countryside a little way off Treviso
road on one of those country estates where the wealthier Venetians used
to spend their summer. Still here are some superb gardens and the 16th
century Villa Grimani Morosini, now restored but not used as a
clubhouse. This arnold Palmer layout is the only course to utilize the
typical features of Italy, obviously meaning omnipresent water - we are
close to Venice after all - in the shape of canals and little lakes.
This is very much the case on the 14th hole, where the fairway and green
are virtually islands on their own. Palmer excavated a lot of earth to
build this very intelligent course, which is fun to play with friends
and where the difficulties are more apparent than real, except for a
number of very large sand-traps that your average hacker dislikes
intensely. This very good layout deserves immaculate green-keeping... so
watch this space.
